This statement is going to live rent-free in my head for a long time to come, I suspect. #ActivityPub

@hrefna still the only way to share meme-potential posts from mastodon to lemmy. It's shouldn't have to be this way
-
A few things.
First, that is _laughably_ far from where we are today.
Second, to the degree we are there it has very little to do with ActivityPub and more to do with people believing in the vision of the fediverse.
Finally, given the lack of support for (and the massive resistance toward) quote-boosting, differing formats between platforms, etc it's hard to see how you can claim that the vision of not using screenshots is something that we are approaching.
-
Further driving home that last point is the outright hostility in certain corners toward "bridge" technologies or towards anything that might look like it hypothetically may make it onto a major (or minor but wannabe major) social media platform.
-
Well, on the quote posting issue: i think that across all the major mobile apps and Phanpy that is already a settled issue and all have basic support.
From Mastodon as a service soon - they will do formal support for this at their server level. And places like Firefish and other fediverse servers have been there for a while.
So I think that issue has been functionally put to bed.

One of about twenty examples, and another example of it being solved by people working _around_ the protocol more than they work _through_ the protocol.
Even then getting here required a lot people doing a lot of fighting over the course of multiple years, a lot of burnout, and involved a lot of derision and attacking of people who come from different online cultural experiences.
-
@tchambers Like yes, it's great we're getting that, and also let's remember what was involved to get here and how little of that discussion was about the protocol representation.
Meaning, flatly, if this was a priority for the protocol then something was lost in translation

@tchambers Minor quibble here, Phanpy displays quote posts nicely, but you can't quote a post yourself from the UI. If you can, I'd like to know how!

@[email protected] rent free? How else are you going to extract wealth from the working class?

@box464 I see this UX in the reply links...allowing for quotes from desktop web UX....do you not see that?
-
@tchambers How did I miss this. I see it on my phone now, but triple checked on my desktop before responding earlier. Apologies.

@box464 All good!
Btw @rolle and [email protected] is this something that #BirdUI or #tangerineUI could also add in a future version? Or is that something beyond what just pure CSS can do?

@tchambers @box464 Cannot be added, because it is not an app. We can just modify a style for something that Mastodon already has. New ”features” are not a thing for CSS. Consider it as ”skin” or ”theme”, that describes it best whereas Phanpy and Elk are full blown apps.

Incidentally I recently ranted along similar lines, bringing up screen shots: https://hachyderm.io/@maegul@akkomane.social/112278407165110460

In fact, I’d argue that what we have now is strange. Each piece of social media interaction has to get translated into whatever my current platform decides is the appropriate format and understanding of that interaction. In reality, that’s really not much progress on the screen shots used to share inter-platform content on big (unfederated) social media.
