Ten Forward Moderation Announcement

Ten Forward Moderation Announcement
I will limit/silence mastodon.social in 24 hours due to the torrential volume of spam accounts and posts originating from mastodon.social.
I am tired of dealing with mastodon.social's general incompetence. The limit/silence will last as long as I deem necessary.
If you do not know what limit/silence means, please see:
Moderation actions - Mastodon documentation
Actions that can be taken against unwanted users or domains.
(docs.joinmastodon.org)

If you are on mastodon.social I strongly recommend that you move to a different, better moderated instance. There are many such instances.
Additionally, I recommend you move to a instance with a much *smaller* user base. You will find that your fediverse experience improves dramatically when you do.

@guinan
Heads up #Mastodon users: if you're on Mastodon.Social, and you're following people on #TenForward, go look into moving to another major server.You can find a small, organized list at...
https://JoinMastodon.org/serversMoving is simple: make an account on the new server, link the accounts in the settings, transfer over data like follows. If you need help, just ask!
Be sure to check that the new server isn't also blocked by a server you want to follow people on. You can do that by looking up an account you are following on the new server: if the account shows up, it's not blocked.
-
@guinan I’m seeing ads (toots from utter strangers, usually commercial) in Infosec.exchange, too.
Must have missed the memo they were gonna do this.
-
@Raccoon This is actually precisely why I *don't* move to another server. I have no idea when tenforward will choose to just block whatever server I am on, but it looks like silencing is all they're willing to do to mastodon.social.
-
@InkomTech @guinan Report them, I imagine @jerry and his crack team will deal with as swiftly as possible.
-
@kuoirad @InkomTech please do report spam when you see it

@ocdtrekkie
I will point out, there are a lot of servers that block mastodon.social for the reason being cited here: it has the biggest problem with Spam bots and trolls.There are a few other large, general purpose instances, which are less likely to be blocked by a given server. You might consider moving to one of them.
-
@jerry @kuoirad hey, my (halfway sure) apologies to I.e people. I think what I’m seeing is due to my asking to see a hashtag in my feed. No idea how I did it and will spend time relearning. I just became aware of a steady uptick in spammy toots and clicked a particularly-bad one’s author Saturday to unfollow, only to learn I wasn’t following them. Clicked a few more and same. Took until a cuppa coffee and a bit more engaged thinking today to conclude maybe it’s this, not the instance going “freemium” or whatever.
-
@InkomTech @kuoirad you can still report posts that are clearly spam, even if not from here.
-
@jerry @kuoirad the one that focused in my attention was ‘on this date in history #, thing happened. It wouldn’t have if they’d used Our Product bla bla bla…’. The scantiest thread of connection…
And where I’m asking for hashtags like Infosec, cybersecurity or the likes, it feels like a grey shade, icky but not worth whinging to an overworked & volunteer moderator team.
That said, I’ll go looking for it. Maybe bruised knuckles or a harsh warning will be enough to deter them.
-
Please name two, unless you are concerned about "shock loading" their user creation components. You could save a lot of people a lot of trouble.

I wrote out a whole post just now for you and then accidentally totally deleted it.https://joinMastodon.org/servers has a whole list that people can select their continent and a topic through. That's what I recommend over any recommendation I could give, especially since some of those servers are for specific marginalized groups and have moderation geared for them.

@[email protected] @[email protected] For what it's worth, your post was preserved here: https://community.nodebb.org/post/https%3A%2F%2Ftechhub.social%2Fusers%2FRaccoon%2Fstatuses%2F113505643629004272
So the content is preserved!

@Raccoon I think what @seachanged meant was two servers that block mastodon.social. (Not just limit it.) For years I have heard many single user instances loudly talk about everyone defederating mastodon.social but it remains basically a complete fiction. Even people who have blocked *Threads* get pushback from users who want to interact with it.
-
-
@[email protected] Correct. NodeBB does handle deletes (barring some regression), and it likely wasn't federated to me.
-
@julian @ocdtrekkie
Considering it wasn't a full delete, but an accidental one, it might have not federated because the delete command might not have been clear. -

Mastodon.Art, obviously, but that's the biggest one. I know I've talked to admins in the past who have blocked it completely, and apparently that's what TenForward is doing. (Personally, I think they should drop it to a limit, but it's their server to run, and their judgement call to make)A while back I was trying to make a list of servers that did or didn't block threads, so that users could switch between them, and so we could coordinate within the tech servers over whether more of us should be blocking them. I don't remember why I got sidetracked, I think that was right before I got COVID in the summer.
