ATP or just doing a ground-up version of my own protocol becomes more and more tempting by the day. Which leaves me sad, but here we are.

@hrefna been kicking around the idea of gluing together openid + rss to make "register once, comment anywhere, get the world delivered to you" without all _this_
-
@greg tbh a "sparkling atom/rss" protocol has a lot of merit.

@hrefna I have a little time and a lot of interest for collaborating on a successor protocol, in case that affects the math for you

It could very well.

@hrefna I’ve been thinking about what a new protocol could be like, and I think there’s room for a suite of simple, strictly-defined protocols that collectively account for all requirements to federate. Something like that would be much easier to implement, and could therefore be bolted onto existing fedi backends.

@[email protected] @[email protected] https://diasporafoundation.org/ I heard diaspora is promising but I have never looked into it. I genuinely don't know what's "promising" about it but I do know that friendica supports diaspora (and some other protocols). I'm curious to how realistic it would be to make instance software that has dual support for diaspora & AP.
-
diaspora* is… interesting.
It's not bad, but it isn't a good substitute. It's basically a purpose-built protocol (meaning that it is built to serve a single use case).
It has a lot of tradeoffs (this is not a criticism, they'll tell you this upfront) that are built around that use case, and a lot of history that brought them to this point (which is both a strength and a weakness).
Basically: they are a good protocol, but too specialized for general purpose

@hazelnoot @hrefna OStatus was this and it sucked because all the bits could get out of sync

@[email protected] i just... why hachyderm then?
Hachyderm is the no1 instance for users who support this... -

@PearlescentFerret what are you basing that on?

The direction of AS/AP is not surprising me.
As for, umm.. protocol variations, seems there's quite a bit of interest, plus also various efforts already underway.
Personally besides social networking protocols I'm also following Leaf / Iroh / Willow delving into local-first paradigm, by @zicklag and @erlend part of Muni Town (formerly Commune).

@PearlescentFerret One of the owners has boosted my criticism, and a lot of positive response to my criticism has come from users on hachyderm?
The most critical response has come from Ye Random Instances.
I'm not surprised that they provide support to IFTAS and I don't oppose them sponsoring IFTAS. Despite my disagreements _with_ IFTAS its core mission and work has been solid and necessary. But IFTAS is a separate organization entirely.
Hachyderm has over 10k active users. Not a monolith.

@[email protected] @[email protected] i mean there's a difference in "oh we sponsor IFTAS" and "We support IFTAS forming a monopoly on community moderation, building and features alongside META, Automattic, Medium". I may not support IFTAS' choice of blocklist, but I do admit that tools such as https://hachyderm.io/@thisismissem/113170288075357382 are invaluable (especially considering this is an opt in, for local instance media that does not scan all federated media).

@[email protected] @[email protected] I believe they endorse/support TBS. They may have changed stances but that was one of the first criticisms I heard about IFTAS. You'd probably be better off asking my administrator @[email protected]
