As an #ActuallyAutistic person who probably also has gender dysphoria, I have always hated ‘shopping’
I hate that ‘women’ are supposed to like ‘shopping’
I hate bad fabrics, fast fashion
Being overwhelmed and going to a store
It’s only in my late 30s that I am finally open to ‘maybe I can learn more about what I want to wear’ the same way I enjoy learning new things
Anyway, I finally managed to buy two things in a store without hating myself *
* had to go to a good store at a quiet time

This is a bigger deal than any other thing I have accomplished that seems to impress other people
Obtaining clothes has been a lifelong mental block!
-
@skinnylatte It's not you. "Shopping" is meant to make you more anxious, to keep you buying more and more. It's all a dark pattern to keep you, me, us, as keyed up as possible over pointless matters so we give up more of our cash for more of that crap which simultaneously makes us feel the anxiety it promises to relieve, and also to have less energy for eating the rich, which is what we actually should be doing right about now.
-
Also doesn’t help that I spent many years of school in a fancy girls’ school with ‘girly girls’ and they really gave me hell for being ‘not a girl’s girl’
I still struggle with any overt overture towards extreme feminity (and avoid it)
Existence as a cis-ish person who got too much unwanted male attention if I dressed up, from the time I was a young teenager (ugh) probably also doesn’t help
-
@phaedral yeah and the overlapping scene that is ‘female beauty products’ is also similarly terrifying
-
@skinnylatte "Existence as a cis-ish person who got too much unwanted male attention ..." This phrasing is totally me. Maybe "CIS-ish," since my curious phase was brief and shallow.
-
@skinnylatte Buddy, tell me, why do I have to affirm my identity with my choice of anti-perspirant? Why are these products gendered? (Thank gawd they haven't got around to gendering toothpaste. Just a matter of time.)
-
@phaedral I think I’m undecided. I appear cis to most people but I don’t feel that way. But I also don’t feel male.
Maybe nonbinary but that also feels imprecise.
-
@phaedral they’ll probably rebrand the chicken toothpaste for cats. Make it synthetic beef. MEN’S TOOTHPASTE
-
@skinnylatte Who says it has to be precise? Or permanent. Be fluid, be good to you, be good to the people you love, be good to strangers who do you no harm?
-
@phaedral oh, mainly coz I do feel unhappy about appearing as female
But I also don’t like the other options
I’ll just have to make up my own

@skinnylatte what about when you go into a computer hw store? I used to find that comparable to what normal people describe shopping as.

@morten_skaaning an actual argument i got into with someone.

taxi driver: are you taking your wife shopping? (we were going to the mall with all the wires and computer things)
male friend: my friend is taking ME wire shopping
