modern #hebrew is substantially different from biblical hebrew, but this is mostly because hebrew changed substantially between the tanakh and the mishnah, under aramaic influence.

It wasn't a made up language. The reason modern Hebrew is different is because of the usage of loanwords from more up to date languages, and new words coined from older roots.
For just one example, Hebrew didn't have the word for tomato, so the person who coined the Israeli word for tomato called it a "lust-apple".

@burnoutqueen There are also small differences that can probably be chalked up to European influence
For example:
מאוד טוב instead of טוב מאוד
(me'od tov instead of tov me'od, adverb before adjective instead of adjective before adverb)

@dikleyt @burnoutqueen as a native speaker I've never heard anyone saying the adverb first, except for when they can't yet think of a word for the adjective, and even then only with quantifiers - "very", "not so much", "kinda", etc.

@laxla @burnoutqueen that makes sense. i know I've heard a lot of speakers go like "ze me'od, me'od..." while searching for the adjective

the Hebrew Prescriptivism Academy wrote about "מאוד טוב" being wrong, which like all prescriptivist documents, serves as a great proof of this constriction existing.
I can say it definitely exists (though I couldn't isolate the cases where it's used just by thinking), and the negative "לא מאוד טוב" is even more common. -

@Yuvalne @dikleyt @burnoutqueen tbh, the Hebrew Academy is so out-of-touch I wouldn't be surprised if they're pre-announcing things as wrong to justify their existence

@Yuvalne @dikleyt @burnoutqueen I mean, I'm a gen z native Hebrew speaker, and "מאוד טוב" sounds extremely ear jarring.
Maybe it's a Jerusalemic Hebrew thing?

sometimes they do good stuff, but most of the time it's stuff like them dunking on Mizrahis for saying למזוג אוכל. -

@Yuvalne @dikleyt @burnoutqueen They're trying to reform thought by reforming language, a practice debunked, what was it, 50 years ago?
It's a political institution pretending to be a linguistic one.
It's the best example, ever, of what's wrong with the Israeli education system --- learning to succeed at the tests, instead of life, and when the education system brings bad results, change reality to match education instead of changing education to match reality.

on its own it's jarring, but in context I find it fine.
checking HeWiki talk pages (which I consider organic enough for this purpose) I've found:

@Yuvalne @dikleyt @burnoutqueen huh, yeah. But I'd say that more means "מאוד" is an adverb. I'm a confused idiot, of course it is an adverb.
