I am *not* looking for Reddit alternatives (ie. not Lemmy, although, to be quite honest, I'm not really sure if or why that's different, but they feel fundamentally different from eg. Discourse or phpBB to me, interesting thing to think about later, I suppose).

@sam I'm a fan of #Discourse forums and I just noticed that they're working on an #ActivityPub extension:
ActivityPub Plugin

Yes, there's cross-forum #ActivityPub support being implemented actually. Really exciting.

@smallcircles @surefire sounds like nothing's ready to get yet, sadly, but I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully one day we'll have a solution! Thanks!

Well, I formulated badly. There's discourse-to-discourse federation already. Option to interact from fedi-to-discourse.
Same on NodeBB side, there's a lot of AP integration already there.
But this taskforce goes further and connects NodeBB to Discourse bi-directional and whichever project that also implements these new standard mechanisms to facilitate such integrations.

@toka and me tested Discourse federation (of public categories) this week and it worked excitingly well.
You can also follow or respond to the categories from here. I'd suggest to give it a shot to produce more useful feedback where to take this.

@smallcircles @surefire there's discourse-to-discourse federation already? I don't see this in any of the forums I'm a member of, is there some trick to using it, or is it buggy or something so everyone turns it off?

It is being test-driven on the #SocialHub forum by @how (SocialHub server host, with Petites Singularites non-profit) and Angus (ThePavilion coop, and who is behind the @Discourse #ActivityPub plugin development).
You can see it in action, in this #SocialHub post, which originated from the #Taler Integration Community Hub:

Hi @[email protected], it's very early days but Discourse and NodeBB have both been working independently on their respective ActivityPub implementations.
As of perhaps a month ago, the two started working together (along with DaniΓ«l from Flarum) as part of the SWICG Threaded Discussions and Forums task force.
As of this week, NodeBB and Discourse can synchronize categories with each other. Discourse has category actors, NodeBB has both user and category actors, plus content discovery via a dedicated route.
Happy to discuss more, but suffice to say this year is going to be big for forums on the fediverse!
