Counter Skynet / Ai / ChatGPT Strategies - Features and more
-
Has AI already read this post?
IMHO and in context of this topic, ChatGPT does not solve a real problem. If you want to debate that there is the another topic. This is for counter stratagems for those that see value and have need.
If you think this is one of those moments where if you can't beat 'em join situations, it certainly is not, but that's like my opinion man. Ok.
There is a need for counter-features and thinking in development support the users and sites that do not wish to engage, and avoid ChatGPT et al., while the rest of the world goes loco to integrate AI to nth degree.

How to prevent total scraping of you historical and current Data-content by the LLM's?

What can you do right out of the box now to stop this dead?
-
What else or what other features support such counter-Ai strategies right now?
What new features and supports are required to tackle the developing issue?
It's common to come across screen grabs of posts on other forums and platforms, sometimes the user finds this the easiest way to share info, ultimately it is always human readable once the res is sufficient.
Anti-Ai-Read plugin (stem the tide for how long?) - Plugin/Feature
Imagine every post has two elements.
- The Original text (user created)
- Image generated human readable text (NodeBB generated)
When a user is reading NodeBB, they are served 2, so they see 2, but when engaging other features, etc. the platform references 1.
My thinking is 1 is only system accessible, and user accessible for posting and editing (needs must basis)
Locking down 2 - Images
You can another layer, a key to users, so they can unlock displaying the images.
For a bot or AI, my thinking is it will not be able to access this content even if it has OCR, it needs the key (how the key might be is generated would help protect against the AI getting the key)
Setting aside pros and cons but as a proof of concept solution, Is it a solution that can actually work?
That's for starters.

How to stop Skynet creating users to bypass blocks and inhabit NodeBB as a formidable population of fake artificial users.
Another scenario-problem for the list.
-
Coders use GitHub Skynet co-pilot and ihrer Skynet tools to aid in writing code and iirc Skynet will have access to all the repo code base too.
Can you code protections and mitigations against Skynet using Skynet?
Eh surely the answer is, no.

If you want to protect content (articles, images) from AI that will start registering fake accounts to circumvent restrictions, the easiest and most affordable solution is to enable filtering in the form of paid access or paid elevation for a new account, set the minimum fee in the form of 0.01$ and if for the sake of bypassing this limitation, AI will earn money and invest it in your community, then why not let him see the content

Golf Club / Country Club - Entrance System
- At core, allow existing users, nominate and/or second a user for final Approval to be admitted to NodeBB.
Borrowing from what has worked for a long time in the real world.
This is a very personal, touchy feely way to manage user admittance. It might seem cumbersome, but let the site owners decide, it's one sure fire way to know that all users are real people.
I think this could be developed out and refined more but you get the idea, it's also the invite system, but with more steps available and petitioning the need for a better invite workflow. I better go check out what form the invite system is in NodeBb properly eh.
-
Outlining how the Golf Club method of user onboarding might work:
- An existing User creates a new nominated-user (temp, fixed holding limit)
- User invites (send email) user to log in a verify placeholder acc
- Invited user completes acc signup
- New nominated-user sign up pending authorisation
- admin reviews new nominating-user
- admin can see the nom actor and seconder (if required) verification-lock
- admin / mod make final decision based on this info
Tangent on the theme:
Invite-Pin:
- NodeBB Generating human-readable codes for manual delivery to potential user

@brazzerstop Money does work as a filter alright, and sometimes not the way you want either, but you also want to be able to facilitate anonymity and leaving behind a digital financial transaction trail does not always jive with the outlook of the online anons, if not using a crypto (and even then!).
It's a good point all the same, it's maybe a very effective method and would work for some forums and in some situations.
The issue here is you either run a sing-up only service or leave it wide open, or pitch something in-between.
I also think this issue comes right under the how to make starting/running a forum suck less, and tbh AI is a big threat to anyone wanting to start something up IMHO, it's just added another level of why bother and then also from the competition of services that are proliferating in competition with essentially forums, forums being virtually first, are now in competition with everything that has come since, and the latest is AI.
It's also not exactly about protecting content, there is that too, but it's the who issue of a few entities hoovering up humanities collective output, then using that to sell back to the same users, and make a profit.
That's but one aspect, but that really stinks. The consequences then, they're equally as stinky and maybe even more deleterious.
This whole putting your life online for it to be digitally digested by the AI godhead, it's starting to really make offline look a million times cooler.
I am not sure what problem AI is solving exactly, so therefore I have to see it as the problem, and the human users need a solution to this new, maybe final problem, it's very much like when the Borg showed up for the first time, it's that level of "oh shit", IMHO.

WWW Diplomacy
Facade - a Frontpage Manger / Landing Page NodeBB Feature
How to onboard users when in a registered access only mode.
If you run a login only forum. A most severe way to stop all crawlers. You lose www visbility.
While this may protect overall privacy in an iron curtain fashion, you most probably still need something to hook and onboard users to your wonderful NodeBB resource, if it's not run as an internal private platform, for e.g. a corporate entity across branches and continents, then you really most likely still do need to be open somehow to the world wide web.
One solution, is to stick a wordpress (or similar) frontend in front of NodeBB, and curate and control what the www sees, and offer the NodeBB forum as a big sign-up bonus. However, there are a lot of undesirable aspect to this as a solution, and IMHO is teh sub-optimal solution because:
- increases or split hosting costs
- requires a different support set
- wordpress / php is a big attack vector
Another solution, one which must be the optimal for sake of staying within the NodeBB system and adhering to Less is most certainly More, thus incurring no extra hosting or maintenance costs, would be to have a Wordpress or CMS-lite like feature and manager the creates unique Landing page(s) as an alternative to any of the existing landing pages.
It's called Facade and it's a NodeBB vapourware or vapourfeature existing in this post, and here is how it might work in a most basic form:
Facade - Create Unique Dynamic Landing pages In NodeBB
- Can populate landing-page/homepage with existing topics and/or bespoke content
- Widget expansive layout
- What else?
Rambling note: Understandably there is overlap with Custom Static pages for NodeBB plugin (caveat: it's been some time I played with that so do not remember the complete feature set) but in this vision the content can also be also be dynamic.
If it were then as simple to customise your landing page as you drag and drop categories in the admin panel which is a neat and beautifully implemented feature for organising layout of the categories page, then we're smokin', expand what already works to enable new features, it might mean best path is to take custom static pages into core to roll in more of the above functionality and features.
