Curious to understand why NodeBB didn't make it to the list. It easily blows Flarum and Discord out of the water !

Nah.... They just wanted it to be "competitive" so voters would take the shinny click bait. If NodeBB were in the mix there would be no contest. And that would be rather boring.

not as nice as NodeBB but I digress.Simply put I think these award sites rely on someone to register? I haven't heard of them before, so I guess I missed the registration

Sometimes the best course of action is just to not play along. I'd rather someone choose NodeBB after doing their due diligence, than choose it because it won some award.
There is, of course, something to be said about "getting your name out there". I'm still salty that NodeBB essentially has a black mark on Wikipedia because the article for it went through AfD, but some things you can't change.
