Ideally, we'd like to take cues from projects that do UX well. There's very much to do on the mobile front, so although we handily beat many forum systems already with our mobile view, there's a long way to go.
Right now, my inspiration is HN Premii, and the use of sidebars is more of an "Android Jellybean" thing, which I am definitely thinking is a good idea.

on a more serious note, we are definitely planning on doing a mobile sidebar. I attempted this a few months ago but decided to wait until we are able to implement as a plugin instead.
