What is the purpose of joining a Group?

I don't see the purpose of groups besides being an Admin. I have 0.9.x running right now and when I create a new group, I don't see how to change permissions for them, so it doesn't seem to serve a purpose.
Why would I join a specific group on this forum? What are the advantages of being a member of 3rd Party Developers, for example..

@baris I'm messing around with NodeBB on localhost, but I don't think I really understand what you suggested. After I create a group, can you let me know in which category should I create the subcategory for this group? I guess it will be even less clear for non-admin users to do this if I allow everyone to create groups? Also, I still don't see how group members will know which groups they may have access to. I think the UX can be better if group members can create categories and topics right in the group page like buddypress? I believe the users will appreciate that more.

You can do this manually, just create a category for that group and only allow that group to find/access/post in that category.
But it wont show on group page like some special thing
I think it would be great to link a group to a category because that qay group page could show some great info about that category like active threads, top poster of the group or last threads.
Nowadays it show all people post wich is not relevant at all
