Groups: What are they used for?

Please forgive the newbie question but what are groups used for aside from listing a collection of users?

Groups are also used to give permissions that only a select people can have, for example you can set up a group called Moderators and assign then the moderation tag on your category's. Groups can also be used to create hidden category's or category's that people cannot create or post new topics into them.
The permissions for the groups are in your category creation.
