Limited-federation networks
-
Super stoked that @[email protected] started ION, a limited federation network that uses allow lists instead of deny lists.
If there's one thing that we know so far in light of these recent discussions about moderation, is that we don't know what the solution is, nor whether a one size fits all approach is even feasible.
There will always be communities who value reach above all, and there will be other communities (especially marginalized ones) to whom limited federation has great appeal.
This is a wonderful experiment, and I wish them all the best!

@julian if only he could be trusted.
To each their own, but I can't trust someone who has lied in their blocklists multiple times to have other instances block others because of their personal issues.
I was on Tier 3 blocklist until he decommissioned it, for being "ableist". Which you know I'm not, if you've been around me for longer than a day.

@BeAware @julian I think outside of the implementer the idea is a good one. We have been running a test instance that is in allow list mode. The plan is to entice those on Big Social to give fedi a try. The Fedi has a lot of evangelicals and a terrible mastodon subculture especially as it relates to anti-blackness, Bluesky, bridgy fed , Threads and AI. We set it up using those federating with Threads as the framework. Many people coming over are used to the town square vibe and would rather give them that experience without them being harassed or seeing others being harassed for different opinions

@damon @julian yeah, it's terrible here in a lot of places.
I hope you can figure something out. Fedi needs more people with a variety of backgrounds and ideas.
As you said, I have no issues with the project besides the implementer himself.
Even then, if he were to "repent" and apologize for all the people he's hurt through the years, I might even be able to give him another chance.
