Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?I’m muting this
Not that I’m surprised, but too many of the conversations this thread generated were very unpleasant, in a typical Mastodon way
If the feature existed, I would also close replies
But Mastodon doesn’t have enough resources to implement it, which is a massive trust and safety issue in my opinion
Not Mastodon’s team fault, but the end result is the same
I’m going back to Bluesky
Peace ️

Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?@rscottjones @wonkothesane I’m sorry but this is wishful thinking
As a start, the overwhelming majority of people don’t want and/or don’t know how to run their instance
And even if they wanted to, properly running an instance is actually very complicated. Trust me, I tried.
It’s not, never was, and will never be, a realistic answer
Once again, I’m sorry but yes, this is textbook elitism to suggest a solution the overwhelming majority of people can’t really use

Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?@idoubtit Personally, similarly to many other people, my experience on Mastodon has been particularly awful
I don’t like Threads, but I find a lot of joy on Bluesky
Everybody is different, once again, use the platform that works best for you
I’m not interested in building yet another monoculture, quite the contrary actually
-
Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?@idoubtit Use the platform that you prefer. I’m literally not arguing that people should use Threads or Bluesky instead of Mastodon.
-
Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?@rscottjones @wonkothesane Probably not, but if Mastodon can’t compete, it won’t have the chance to live up to its ambition to offer a different way to do social media
Offering this allegedly superior experience to only a very small fraction of the user base being the literal definition of elitism

Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going? All of this should be a wake up call for #Mastodon as a community
I’m not super optimistic to be honest, which is why I’ve basically deserted the platform and I’m spending my time on #Bluesky these days
The silver lining of today’s events in Brazil is that even if Mastodon is left out of the equation, another open platform is benefiting from this mess

Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going? It pains me to see #Mastodon in such a dire state
Meta is building and growing #Threads quickly, and Mastodon can only acts as a powerful counterweight if the platform itself is in good shape
Today, it is not
It’s not catastrophic, but the writing is on the wall
And what’s virtually certain is that Mastodon has definitely missed the unique window that Elon Musk opened when he bought Twitter
Such a window won’t reopen soon, and possibly will never happen again

Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?#Mastodon has been losing users for a long time
Many of us warned that the app was too complicated, the culture too toxic, the economic model not strong enough to sustain a fast-paced development
In just a few months, #Bluesky shipped DMs, major moderation features, third-party moderation, and will soon ship video
The last major Mastodon update was 11 *months* ago. An eternity.

Me, feeding 2 people and 2 cats on a 60k EUR salary without benefits (because technically self-employed), reading those comments that claim a 501(c)(3) is some kind of nefarious scheme to hide money@damon @chriswho @QueenieBeanie @Gargron Also, the worst abuse I’ve ever received on social media was on Mastodon a year ago, when I said that I have a legitimate use case for quote posts.
And bear in mind that I was harassed on Twitter for years by far left activists.
These ideologues exist on Mastodon. They brigade, harass, and "criticize" based on facts that don’t exist. I don’t see why trying to appease them should be a goal in any way, shape, or form.

Not all of them were kicked out of Big Social. But they sure all used the ideological leftist inclination of many on Mastodon (including admins) to harass others in ways that wouldn’t have been possible on Big Social.

I’m increasingly convinced that defederation of Threads will backfires against the instances that defederate. There is a vocal, but small, minority of users who have very strict opinions on Threads, the Fediverse and Mastodon. But they’re a minority.The...@julian 100% agree. The vocal minority who pushed for defederation is a minority.
The silent majority, who was unaware of the discussion, did not care, or had no opinion, will be an even larger problem to deal with.

There is a vocal, but small, minority of users who have very strict opinions on Threads, the Fediverse and Mastodon. But they’re a minority.
The more Threads will federate, the more users who aren’t part of this minority but have to live with the consequences of its demands will ask for a different direction.

Reading through live coverage by @deadsuperhero of @fediforum, and I’m impressed by all the new stuff that was developed over the past year for #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse.Lots of momentum is happening even if much stuff hasn’t gone “mainstream” ye...@laurenshof @deadsuperhero @atomicpoet @fediforum @fediversenews Seconding this! It feels we have reached some sort of escape velocity threshold.
In retrospect, Flipboard and WordPress federating was where things began to take a very different direction: it’s not microblogging anymore, and it’s not small platforms or projects either.
Something radically different is coming, it’s so cool to witness this change in real time!

But these problems can severely hamper its growth, hence why I think they need to be discussed and addressed.
Of course, those are just suggestions!

Is there any plan to run an episode, or even several, on some of the issues that are documented within the Fediverse? In particular, the racism that pushed many Black users out of the platform, the reply guy problem (I’m considering stopping publishing on Mastodon because of that), or the many moral panics targeted at projects a vocal, but toxic, minority doesn’t understand?
