You should always have a backup before updating anything in my opinion. Better to be safe. I dont see any problems to update from 0.7.1 to 1.7.5.
Download new source
Copy over the config and static content (if you have any)
run ./nodebb upgrade
Simple as pie, but remember. Always backup first
