The mayor of Columbus, Ohio wrongly claimed that city data stolen during a ransomware attack was "unusable" to the cybercriminals.
A security researcher subsequently told local media that the city's claims weren't true, and that the stolen data had been published on the ransomware gang's dark web leak site.
Instead of handling its scandal and admitting the severity of the cyberattack, the city secured a court-issued restraining order against the security researcher.
