I have to admit to some level of frustration regarding social media right now. In the "bad" old days, the difference between Twitter. Facebook, IG, and Linked-in we're super clear, and it was clear what kind of effort and content (whether personal or professional) you put in to them would lead to what kind of result - there was some kind of rationalty.

I have been and am many things in the world, and as much as I would love to, I can't go all in on the #fediverse. Not enough people in the demographics that matter to me (writers, friends and family, embodiment/mindfulness community) are here. Not enough news or political organizations are here.
That said, there are things I really value about the #fediverse that don't exist elsewhere.
So I feel a level of frustration and a bit of confusion as to where to put effort.

Do I like the corporate overlords in charge of the other options? God no. Sometimes I want to ditch social media altogether (and, frankly, just sticking to the #fediverse for my social media needs would have close to the same effect in relation to 90% of my social and "parasocial" relationships.)
So I keep fumbling. I'm sort of on #BlueSky and #Threads, half-heartedly on FB and IG. I visit Linked in about as much as I used to (which I'd like twice a year.)
Where are you?

I'm all in on Fediverse. This is why I'm always trying to figure out ways to get more mainstream organizations on here, like encouraging government entities to create servers, encouraging journalists and companies to make accounts, encouraging big media organizations to make their own server.
I hear these journalists saying that there aren't as many people on here as Twitter, but that's really not a good excuse to be Twitter exclusive: the network doesn't grow because it's already big, it grows because people who believe in it put in a little bit of work. If all the journalists who complain about Twitter took five seconds to just make an account here and cross post everything they post on Twitter to that account, the Fediverse wouldn't have the very issue of lack of uservase they complain about. People want to move here, but they don't want to use multiple social medias so they can follow the people who won't.

Great thread. I'm mostly here, on Bluesky, and on a very small non-federated social network with a few friends. A lot of what I'm interested in talking about relates to social networks and how to use them for organizing, or the problems with surveillance capitalism and opportunities for alternatives, so there are plenty of interesting discussions on that front both here and Bluesky ... but strangely enough not everybody finds that as fascinating as I do, so that's not enough of a lure to get friends and family here. And for some of my other interests -- and news -- there's a lot less available here.
