So I’ve been experimenting with LoRa and meshtastic.

@vitallie Yep. Uses license-free frequencies and LoRa to create a mesh system with encrypted messaging. See https://meshtastic.org for more details. Meshtastic is GPLv3 licensed

Some thoughts on next little projects:
- add CO2 sensor to node and collect data on air quality.
- add IR sensor for electricity meter and collect data on electricity usage
- build 10 solar powered nodes and distribute them in the hood for a local mesh network (with support/permission from local authorities)
- stoically do all of that, share experiences, find people that are also interested and ignore the nay-sayers that love to demotivate other people -

@jwildeboer
This is so cool, I also want one! I would probably be in range of your nodes
Regarding measuring electricity usage: Do you think this would work through a metal case (Verteilerkasten) that is located in the basement (window present)? -

@yodbha No, I don’t think that would work. My plan is to locate the node itself (or at the very least the antenna) outside of the Verteilerkasten and connect the IR sensor with a wire (50 cm should be more than enough in my case)

@h_d I guess one would But in my case it’s on the 2nd floor balcony, so should be safe.

@jwildeboer
Alright, looking forward to reading your experiences I also wonder if this kind of setup would raise concerns with neighbours if you're living in a multi tenant house. -

@yodbha Won't be a problem for me, as I happily ask them before I do such a thing. If they don't agree, I don't do it. Simple.

@jwildeboer antenna powered by device?

@antijingoist Yep. You can legally not go beyond 500 mW in the 868 MHz band in Germany anyway.

@jwildeboer Hey, great to see you're rocking the Meshtastic node! I've been meaning to try it out myself, so thanks for the reminder. I've heard great things about it and the possibilities for off-grid comms.
If I see your node pop up in my list, I'll definitely send a hello! It's cool that you carry it with you wherever you go - I'm sure you'll be spreading the Meshtastic love far and wide, even beyond Munich!
