So I’ve been experimenting with LoRa and meshtastic.

@jwildeboer
I absolutely love reading your reports as you learn these things and progress to ever cooler setups. Thanks.Presumably, you'll want to hang this as high as possible for good distance. Does one need to worry about lightning protection in that case?

@jwildeboer @stickus This reminds me of a Nokia 3310 replacement pcb, which I once stumbled upon: https://www.mastrogippo.it/2018/07/more-adventures-with-nokia-3310-teaser/
That would make a great #meshtastic messenger, wouldn't it? It even has space for a LoRa module…

@DL6PL @jwildeboer @stickus I read this and immediately Nokia 3300b came to mind, that was my first phone! With the keyboard it’d be perfect for meshtastic — @joeycastillo please save us and make a replacement board for us!

@jwildeboer I looked into that a couple of years ago when working on a "blackout" paper for #Freifunk. Turns out, after talking to people about such options, the biggest hurdle is that if people don't use such an app almost daily, there will not be a big adoption.
Which in my case (blackout) is not helpful in emergency cases

@ascherbaum Which is why I added the sensor network option

After a few days of letting stuff work in the background, adding a better antenna to one node (still working on making it weatherproof so it can be mounted outside) I can see quite a bunch of nodes happily building a mesh. But still no messages being exchanged. Seems meshtastic users don’t like to talk Or I don’t (yet) know which channels I need to configure …

@jwildeboer do you have some RAK Wireless based node? They are better in battery consumption. Using Nordic NRF chips with BT, not WiFi. I'm currently experimenting with Raspberry Pi Pico node. It's cheap, but battery consumption is not that great as nRN can do.

@jan No, I currently have 2x Heltec V3, 1x Heltec Paper and a Lilygo T-Deck, so everything ESP32 based. Battery use is not really a problem for me, the orange node that I carry with me, lasts for a full day with its 2000 mAh battery. The other node is connected to a wall wart ATM.

@jwildeboer well the blue RAK based on last photo lasts about 4-5 days on 900 mAh battery, depending on usage. The purple small has GPS inside sending GPS location every 5 minutes and lasts almost 2 days running on 980 mAh battery.

@jan I am waiting for the Heltec T114 to get stable support for meshtastic (there seem to be some little problems ATM that are delaying official support) and get one or two of those.

@jwildeboer T114 has nRF chip too. Currently have 3 nodes based on RAK (https://botland.store/wisblock/19318-wisblock-meshtastic-starter-kit-base-board-core-development-module-868mhz-rak-wireless-6973862933561.html), 2 nodes based on Rpi Pico, 1 stationary node based on Heltec Stick Lite, bought recently Seeedstudio WIO Tracker 1110. #Meshtastic is fun...

@jan I admit I mainly bought the Heltec V3 because of the good looking case from Alley Cat that I printed on my 3D printer

So if you see JHW Orange Node e99c (ORA2-e99c) in your Meshtastic node list, feel free to send a direct message This is the node I carry around with me wherever I go, so it could show up at a lot of places, far away from #Munich

@jwildeboer is 1edc a different setup or is it just the geography that allows it to reach out that far?

@jwildeboer Is this some kind of packet radio??

@antijingoist 1edc (AKA as 81827 Meshtastic Node e1c) is the stationary node with the bigger antenna on my balcony I did change its coordinates a bit to not give away where I live.

@vitallie Yep. Uses license-free frequencies and LoRa to create a mesh system with encrypted messaging. See https://meshtastic.org for more details. Meshtastic is GPLv3 licensed

Some thoughts on next little projects:
- add CO2 sensor to node and collect data on air quality.
- add IR sensor for electricity meter and collect data on electricity usage
- build 10 solar powered nodes and distribute them in the hood for a local mesh network (with support/permission from local authorities)
- stoically do all of that, share experiences, find people that are also interested and ignore the nay-sayers that love to demotivate other people -

@jwildeboer
This is so cool, I also want one! I would probably be in range of your nodes
Regarding measuring electricity usage: Do you think this would work through a metal case (Verteilerkasten) that is located in the basement (window present)?
