So I’ve been experimenting with LoRa and meshtastic.

@luisfcorreia If you have more time, they are often quite cheap at aliexpress. Also check eBay. I got them via Amazon because I needed them fast

I really like meshtastic because it allows for innovation on top of their base solution. And it is GPLv3 licensed https://github.com/meshtastic

But first: upgrades The two Heltec nodes now have batteries, so I can take them outside!

@jwildeboer really curious about the range you can achieve. And compare free range vs. city ...

@jwildeboer you know the battery has a 🥴🥴 'CE' 'Chinese Export' logo and not European 'C E' logo?
As there is no price difference what to use, you can, be sure that it won't comply with 'E C' regulations.(top logo looks like the real EU logo.)

@vosje62 that’s an old urban myth, AFAIK. See „Misuse“ and „China Export“ at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CE_marking These Makerfocus batteries are a known good brand and used a lot in maker projects.

@maxheadroom The nodes I can directly „see“ from my Heltec node are 13 km away (with bad signal) and 7 km (fair signal). I don’t know which antennas these other nodes use, though. UPDATE: 19 km with "fair" signal.

@becha Sounds good Let’s see if I have enough time (and energy) to document a more detailed plan so we can all find out what already exists and what needs to be made

Siehe https://meshtastic.org/docs/overview/encryption/

Tomorrow I will get a 6W USB-C solar panel so I can put one of my nodes outside on the balcony and hopefully extend its reach with the big antenna that should also arrive tomorrow A solar powered meshtastic node with backup battery. Total cost around 50€.

@jwildeboer
I absolutely love reading your reports as you learn these things and progress to ever cooler setups. Thanks.Presumably, you'll want to hang this as high as possible for good distance. Does one need to worry about lightning protection in that case?

@jwildeboer @stickus This reminds me of a Nokia 3310 replacement pcb, which I once stumbled upon: https://www.mastrogippo.it/2018/07/more-adventures-with-nokia-3310-teaser/
That would make a great #meshtastic messenger, wouldn't it? It even has space for a LoRa module…
