So I’ve been experimenting with LoRa and meshtastic.

Another weird idea: A simple, cheap messenger device, like a pager with a screen and a T9 keyboard. Should attract both the young(er) and older generations Working title: The Hood Whisperer. Or the LORIA

I will need to patch/extend meshtastic though, I guess. Add some sort of challenge/response thingy that allows you to bind a node to you as a person, so you can have encrypted p2p chats. Identity ownership in a mesh network, truly decentralised.

@jwildeboer you mean something like the nokia 3210?
Why should this attract a younger generation in particular?

@jwildeboer "Add some sort of" - there should be some standard out-of-the-box solutions for that.
Homegrown identity has similar properties like homegrown cryptography ...

@feyter A local-only network meets their growing expectations for more privacy. I might be totally wrong, but it's worth a try. And building cool gadgets with T9 is also fun (at least for me) and not a big risk, financially or time wise.

@lobingera It's a field I've been working in and with for many years, so I already have some solutions in mind that are far above home grown and use well-known, good approaches.

(and to the nay-sayers that are popping up as expected I say: I am free to play around and try to find people that are also interested. You trying to shoot me down at every single step instead of offering help or productive criticisms: that just flows off of me like if I'm plated with teflon #WBSB

@lobingera When it comes to that stage, I will make it public and, of course, open source. If you have ideas on how to approach this, I am all ears But demanding time from me to satisfy your curiosity that according to my experience with you always ends ups with destructive criticism won't happen

@jwildeboer ah sorry I missed the fact that this would be a local / P2P network thing.
That's cool indeed but I think not that attractive to most people at all. Especially younger people tend to be more connected "globally" in my observation. However I don't have any market studies to pull from

@jwildeboer I would need to start by getting at least two devices and for a fun project, this isn't "cheap"
do you have suggestions for the lora modules?
(well intended, not a troll)

@luisfcorreia I got a set of two Heltec V3 boards for around 40€. Printed cases for them with my 3D printer. They run meshtastic and I can hook them up via WLAN to my MQTT broker and thus inject commands from/to NodeRED.

@luisfcorreia And I already had a LilyGO T-Deck I got quite a while ago. But that one I mainly bought because it is a cool looking device with an original Blackberry keyboard https://www.lilygo.cc/products/t-deck

@jwildeboer have you swallowed a Red Pill?

@cymplecy No, establishing individual identity ownership as a fundamental human right is a project I have been working on since 10+ years. Working title: TCP/ID. Comes from the ideas of the United Transnational Republics, which goes back to 2001. http://blog.utnr.net/the-venice-draft

@luisfcorreia If you have more time, they are often quite cheap at aliexpress. Also check eBay. I got them via Amazon because I needed them fast

I really like meshtastic because it allows for innovation on top of their base solution. And it is GPLv3 licensed https://github.com/meshtastic
