I also love telling the story of how when I went to Hong Kong as a child, I was like, 'mommy why do they eat dogs here'
She whispered, 'the first character on the menu? that's hot! as in, hot dog'
(I did not read traditional chinese, so i only recognized the second character, the one for dog)

@skinnylatte
I didn't know this about Switzerland, cool!Many Europeans eat horses but I take it in the US that's equated to eating a pet too.
-
@faassen a Swiss-German friend told me about it. He said it was not super common these days but was done by some. You have to raise them yourself, you can't buy them. The point remains, *some* Swiss people do that, *some* Chinese people do that. It's just a weird thing to claim for an entire people.

@skinnylatte hey, wait
Although it is not forbidden to eat dogs or cats in Switzerland, it seems to be hearsay. But the Swiss to love horsemeat, especially in the French speaking regions. https://www.reddit.com/r/ali_on_switzerland/s/xVnoYMMpuP -
@RalphBassfeld a Swiss friend told me about it, in that ‘some people in rural areas still eat dog’; my point is, it’s the same as other people accusing other cultures of eating dogs. Mentioning the Swiss isn’t about saying *they* eat dogs, it’s also calling out a disparity between who gets publicly thought of as dog eaters (Asians and Africans)
-
To be clear I’m not saying go accuse other people of dog eating. I’m saying ask yourself why these labels stick but only for Asian and African people
-
@skinnylatte also: weird deodorant being absolutely necessary for every single person on earth, especially East Asians

@quantsini did you read about the gene mutation thing?
