email if it worked like activitypub would be great, it would have problems like "my mailserver can't speak to yours because mine is qmail and yours is postfix, and everyone really speaks postfix-SMTP, because the standard doesn't actually specify anyth...

how in the fuck is it that a modern-day web protocol managed to turn out worse than some shit designed in the 70s to communicate between gear that didn't even agree on the bit-length of a byte

Erin 💽✨replied to mx alex tax1a - 2020 (4) on last edited by@atax1a because if you talk to a developer about protocols instead of apps in the 2020s they'll look at you like you've grown a second head

@atax1a there's a data format specification, it's right there. It has issues but it's not like RFC 822 is a beauty that interoperates per the original spec either.
But you don't build Web Applications on data formats, you build them on Databases; you don't build mobile apps by downloading the users inbox, you do it by querying the server on every button click
Or at least this is what people keep trying to tell me, despite having experience that you can do things to the contrary -

@erincandescent rfc822 had updates to constrain it to something more tasteful! but like if i want to move between mastodon and gotosocial, the answer appears to be "go fuck yourself" and this makes us sad for reasons

You could probably mostly do Mastodon to Akkoma/Pleroma. In fact I know it's been done (albeit by someone terrible). This mostly works because Akk/Pleroma are AS2 on the inside, with some differences from how Mastodon decided to do it because... They did it first.
For everyone who started after Mastodon switched from OStatus to ActivityPub... I'm just disappointed -

@erincandescent we weren't here for that, was it a huge flag day?
-
Erin 💽✨replied to mx alex tax1a - 2020 (4) on last edited by@atax1a no, when it refreshed someone's user info it would suddenly get AS2 back instead of AS1+Atom and then it could start throwing AS2 activities at someone's inbox. They worked in parallel for like a year
