Another idea I'm playing with: a fediverse starter pack.

@thisismissem Well the issue is, if I have a username as @ user @ domain.com, I would think to hit the domain.com server, but at lest in the one particular case, this will not work, I seem to need to access it at subdomain.domain.com?
Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or maybe the server is not set up right?
Let me DM you details, if you're interested.
-
@stefan if the user is @ user @ domain.com then the webfinger endpoint should absolutely be resolvable on domain.com — it's just the mastodon specific API for "account lookup" would be on an alternative URL.
-
@stefan and email or chat (discord/matrix) is a better way to reach me at the moment. But I probably won't reply until the morning; dealing with an upset stomach & getting ready for bed.

@stefan My advice for thoughtful people who feel weird about writing (everyone feels weird about writing) is always "Write an email about it to a friend—*in* your email program, to fool your brain—snip the name off the top and cut any in-jokes, and you have a fine draft."
Which is to say: Write it, Stefan!
-
@kissane Definitely thinking about it now, thank you for the encouragement!

@andy @glitchdotcom @eleventy Thank you, and thanks for sharing this!

@stefan @glitchdotcom @eleventy This is really cool. I think there’s so much that can be done with this. It might be useful to offer a CSV file to download that people can mass import so they don’t need to click every single link.
-
@stefan @glitchdotcom @eleventy (That avoids the need to login.)
-
@ernie @glitchdotcom @eleventy Interesting idea, let me look into that!
-
@stefan @glitchdotcom @eleventy You would have to emphasize the importance of “merge” instead of “overwrite” in whatever you do, since the import is pretty close to a destructive action.
-
I’ve seen this on other welcome to madto things and it really bothers me:
Stop suggesting people join mastodon.social
SO MANY other instances (including mine) have it either limited or outright blocked because it’s so badly moderated, that a newbie is going to have such a skewed view. And so many newbies fall off and onto other platforms like bluesky because that’s easier than switching instances.
-
@ernie @glitchdotcom @eleventy Luckily that seems to be the default, but definitely worth stressing this, thank you!
-
@Alien_Sunset Very fair point, and typically I avoid that, but I've been having some thoughts about the whole "too hard to pick a server" thing recently and how to best address that.
I won't get into it much here, but for the time being, I'm just going to switch out the link for instances.social.
Thank you for calling this out!
-
@tom I think I'm just going to keep things simple for the time being.
I think having the field to put in your home server on the page helps already. And it's saved for your next visit!

@stefan Nice work! Your demo kicked off a conversation in the WeDistribute Matrix room, where it turns out a number of people have also been working on similar things. (My own design notes look like this: https://stuff.jfietkau.me/starter-packs) Some of us are now trying to maybe join forces.

@julian Thank you!
Very detailed notes, and some things I've also been thinking about as well!
And thanks for notifying me, I will have to catch up on there.
-
@stefan This is an awesome idea! Just to be extra clear (mind my paranoia lol), we can take your basic starter kit and replicate it ourselves for anything else?
-
@naan Yes, absolutely!
Just consider this as a bit of an experiment, sort of a replacement for Google Sheets that some people use for this purpose.
It would be best to check with the folks if they're okay to be added to such a list, as they don't really get notified, which is something I am looking into next.
I am also noticing an issue when adding accounts with some non-standard Mastodon servers, so if you see a blank space, that will be likely the reason.
Hope this helps!
-
@stefan Oh this is absolutely more than helpful!! Thank you so much for the deeper explanation and tips, I'm quite excited to try replicating one. Bsky's starter kits are one of the few things it's doing well, imo!

@naan My pleasure!
