Dear mastodon,
My teenager did an uh-oh.
And now we need a new computer monitor.
Previously, we would search “best gaming monitors 2024”
But now I know that #enshittification is a thing, and I trust no-site.
Can you all please recommend a non- #AI generated evaluation of best value-for-money monitors website? #Reviews
Thank you, Humans
!

@atthenius The Wirecutter’s recommendations are usually solid. I have had good experiences with Dell UltraSharp monitors in my work, so seeing that in the “best picture quality” slot feels like a reasonable rec to me.

@atthenius Tom’s Hardware, a PC hardware review site of long standing, also keeps a set of “best right now” recommendations in various categories that get updated every few months. Here’s their current monitor recommendations.

@jalefkowit @atthenius I have had Ultrasharps for decades, really. They’re good to great but not for gaming. I wouldn’t necessarily buy from NewEgg (I have, and no complaints), but their site is good for filtering what is available, from drop down menus like the good old days even. And the customer reviews are from nerds.

@jalefkowit is Tom’s still human written too? I am a poor AI detector.
Thanks!

Newegg is an old school site that’s held out.
We used to order from them all the time— but probably less so the past few years. Are they still normal? Thanks for the tip!

@atthenius @jalefkowit I think it got sold at some point and I remember there being dissatisfied noises, but they’ve kept the site as is. I haven’t ordered anything from there in ages, I can’t really say how they are these days.
I was just there the other day checking on some monitors.

@atthenius I have no reason to think it isn’t. The monitor roundup is credited to Christian Eberle, who’s had a byline at Tom’s for more than a decade.

@sjuvonen @atthenius Newegg’s been passed through a few different owners since 2016, and the once-famous customer service has suffered. Here’s a summary of the most recent high-profile blowup, from 2022.
I still buy stuff there myself, mostly because the main alternative is Amazon and they somehow manage to be even worse. It’s just sad to see a company I used to recommend unreservedly now be just another “caveat emptor” joint.
