I'm amused by several things about https://freeourfeeds.com/ the "free ATProto" campaign but not the least of which is that the preview image fetched for that page looks like the Diaspora* logo

@cwebber @eloquence Iโm very curious to hear your opinion about this. Because even though they build on top of the AT protocol, they are dependent on the relay and structure from the company, right?

@cwebber @eloquence Isn't there like... already this whole network free from billionaire control that half this list of people has already been on?

@doktorzjivago @eloquence My main thoughts about Free Our Feeds are I wonder if anyone launching this read my recent blogposts which analyzed ATProto and its ecosystem IN DEPTH and determined that it's quadratic to scale towards decentralization in its present form, which nobody has really disputed since https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/ https://dustycloud.org/blog/re-re-bluesky-decentralization/
So is Free Your Feeds hoping to move towards actual decentralization, or are they hoping to just set up a *second* major relay and appview

@ocdtrekkie @cwebber @eloquence And that has failed at all to attract or retain any of the normies from the other half of the list? Much love for mastodon but half of us donโt know who the celebs on this list are and the other half will attack you for even caring who a celeb is.

@luis_in_brief @ocdtrekkie @cwebber @eloquence
they are raising $30m. for all the years #ActivityPub has existed, has it even had $1m total spent on it? use that money to build all the stuff people want but with #ActivityPub. they are basically admitting that #ATproto is not currently designed to be decentralized the way they want it yet either.

@cwebber @eloquence This will take just $30M over three years.

Even the Bluesky lead developers do not know how they are going to dig out of their own hole without becoming something resembling AP: https://mastodon.communick.com/@raphael/113796033637861505

@cwebber What they're trying to do here seems to overlap with what Spritely wants to do. Perhaps there's a way you can get this org to fund your work (and more hands) if they have the ability to fundraise that much?
At the minimum, your voice is critical.

@MayInToronto Well, mainly... my voice is stretched thin. I'd love to have more help fundraising for Spritely. But I've said all I have to say about ATProto really. I got invited tto give a talk about ATProto recently at an event the Bluesky folks were also speaking at and I declined. I don't want to focus on ATProto... I don't have that much more to say about it. I'm focused on the future-facing stuff we're doing at Spritely.
But yeah if anyone wants to help with fundraising... I'm interested

@MayInToronto Part of the reason I declined is I didn't want to sit at an event and be "the ATProto/Bluesky naysayer". I've given my analysis, and people can find it pretty easily. If I stood up and spoke further, I'd feel like I was being negative unnecessarily, and I don't want that.
Right now I'm interested in building! And the stuff Spritely is doing is fairly differently-shaped than what ATProto is doing. We've got a lot of work to do.

@cwebber I think that's mostly down to your blog posts being dense (literally) and slightly advanced reading.
then again they should know better and be able to read dense highly technical stuff.

@cwebber @MayInToronto I write Kotlin. How can I help @spritely ?

@travisfw @MayInToronto @spritely Hi! Thanks for your interest!
Well, of course you could learn Scheme and help contribute directly!
https://files.spritely.institute/papers/scheme-primer.html
https://files.spritely.institute/papers/spritely-core.htmlOr you could port our protocol, OCapN, to Kotlin!

I'd love to try porting the protocol if people are on hand to help. Where is the best place to ask questions? -

@travisfw @MayInToronto @spritely Are you on irc.libera.chat? #ocapn or #spritely

This begs the question:
What do they find so frustrating about the fediverse (Which would be far cheaper to fund and easier to influence), that they would forgo putting their efforts in the ActivityPub direction.Is it simply that Bluesky is 10 times bigger and growing faster? An important factor, I have to admit.
