Shout out to everyone maintaining #opensource projects despite having plenty of corporate/business red tape reasons providing excuses not to.

Shout out to the hobbyists with their passion projects that operate them in their own time and often at a financial loss, but still make time and space to respond to issue reports and review pull requests. Much of the backbone of #opensource is due to the efforts of such pioneering hobbyists.

@vwbusguy See also: the internet super double secretly run by a bunch of folks who accidentally creates IXes because that's just sorta what happens!

Shout out to the commercial stewards of #opensource projects that didn't cave to some VC's demands to take a project proprietary or open core - the ones who realize the value of respecting, fostering, and leveraging the open source community as a core part of the business strategy, rather than just for the sake of marketing.

Shout out to those contributing #infrastructure resources necessary for #opensource communities to have a stable environment to grow their community and collaborate, from those hosting torrents to repository mirrors to servers to whole platforms.

Shout out to all the people who provide testing and documentation for #opensource projects, paving the way for open source projects to be more viable and be a better experience for new and existing adopters.

@warthog9 I went down a rabbit hole about this a little while back and found it fascinating that it was born a rural and urban phenomenon - people in rural areas without decent ISP coverage just trying to find a means to connect and collectives in municipalities working together to subsidize access.
-
@vwbusguy The history of randomly creating IXes goes nearly back to the advent of the internet being public practically:
Fun fact: PAIX was/is housed in a former elementary school
-
@warthog9 I kind of love the idea of hobbyist communities joining together to the extent that other ISPs don't want their customers to miss out by not peering with them even as those hobbyist groups might not immediately have access to Google, Facebook, etc during startup. I love that a community might start by caring more about connecting with one another than to various internet giants.

@jelloeater It seems like the kind of thing that starts and builds organically over time with pooling of resources along the way because looking at all you would need to do and have happen from start to finish otherwise seems absolutely daunting.
