the "oh I want to make something with AP" to "burn it with molten lava" pipeline has been reached I see lol

@jalcine oh i live here, now. I've been at this place for months.
But now the research director for the social web foundation is berating people for doing things with other protocols while continuing to quash any effort to improve AP. Strangely, it's put me into a contrarian mood about the whole thing

@jenniferplusplus @jalcine what are the current interesting alternatives? I know about diaspora but know very little about it, don't know about any other newer protocol projects

If someone wants to maintain the curated list, then there might be a delightful-socialweb-protocols at https://delightful.club
Already @damon created a brief list at: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/socialwebfoundation-what-do-people-think/4564/20

"you cannot implement me in a way that matters" deserves way more love than this, come on

@jenniferplusplus @jalcine yeah, activity pub is using an open world design, which means, everyone trying to make sense of it with statically typed programming languages is bound to cry and be imprisoned in a very, very dark place indeed. Been there, done that, hated a lot of it. Luckily, lemmy released afew crates to help with describing at least the common subset of the protocol instances use when talking to each other, but it's still very difficult. Atproto, for example, isn't easier, because there too many things are about hashes and crypto stuff, which is even harder to wrap ones head around

@esoteric_programmer @jenniferplusplus @jalcine As somebody who uses Go, which is strictly typed, and having implemented for kicks & giggles (research) some ActivityVocab and ActivityPub, I am also in that dark place. We should be highly suspicious of and avoid anything developed by anybody who thinks these are even close to good protocols; they’re an absolute mess on so many levels.

* DFRN
* Leaf (a layer on top of willow)
* Websub, Micropub, etc along with the proposed microsubThey are a little different in nature, but it's also worth putting a note on:
* XMPP
* Nostr
* Salmon
* Secure Scuttlebutt -

Sure, yeah. But I'm not sure what I would even do with such a list, as a fediverse developer. The network I want to connect to and improve is this one. Which means I have to implement activitypub, in a manner that's at least mostly legible to the existing network.So, hunting around for alternatives feels like a mostly academic exercise, to me.
