Something else to consider is the amount of free help available.People like me will actively try to bring in anyone who tries to make a new server or software, regardless of who it is, simply because we want to grow the network. It is a non-profit social movement, full of volunteers who would be happy to help on the technical and social end of things, with a huge amount already invested in infrastructure to bring in new users and organizations.
You don't get that with a closed, legacy style social network.
The one thing I would warn a company coming in about is the fact that, because anyone can make a server, including people with ideologies that may make them hostile, you may deal with an initial wave of hostility towards you. This caused the raspberry pi team to panic, because when someone dropped a FediBlock, they seemed to think that kicked them off the entire network, when it was just a fraction of it. That's important to know going in.
