@chris I always found it bizarre that "BC liberals" are actually not liberals :=)
I think their old branding got them unintentional voters and the new branding is a no-go. I think the NDP will also benefit from this, but yes, it is a loss for centrist voters who now have starkly different parties running -

@samir in fairness, the NDP has moved steadily to the centre (ie. to the right) as well, but with this development, the gap definitely widens.

@chris there might also be some hope of persuading centrists who'd had partisan attachment to the BC Liberals to either vote NDP (to keep the right out) or stay home.
Total failure of party politics, though - the BC Liberals handed the reigns to a total goon who proceeded to steer them off a cliff.

@chris This is a disaster for BC and a threat to basic sanity
We need a center left combined ticket. Lets see if the NDP and Greens can overcome their differences and give us a coalition.

@Yup_Its_Holly @samir not sure I agree with that honestly. But if they do share a name, they should be directly affiliated so it is clear and transparent, as the NDP is. There was no such direct link between the BC Liberals and Liberal Party of Canada, and I don't think there is any such link between the Conservative Party of Canada and BC Conservatives.

@chris This remains a democracy. One can only be given power in BC. One can't grab it.

As I keep thinking, the political landscaping in Canada has utterly changed since #Facebook banned newsReal journalism uptake has fallen 45% in the whole country, and only 20% of Canadians are aware of it
We are heading towards #BrexitNorth
With practically no journalists to cover it
Elections in Canada are gonna go off a cliff unless other parties figure out new ways to reach voters, while facing a vast gap in fundraising

Choice is an illusion. The difference between the two 'viable' parties is negligible.
Democracy for white wealthy landowners... Kicks in the teeth for the rest of us.
No matter who wins, we lose.

@douglaspynn I disagree. There are certainly large differences in how the NDP and a John Rustad Conservative government would run things, and there would be further difference with a Green party government What you are effectively advocating for is to not participate, and that is *always* a recipe for fascism.

Fascism is happening whether I want it to or not. Right now. This very second.
And is firmly in control. The Greens aren't viable. We will all die from covid before they do anything worthwhile.
The bcndp thoroughly decimated our forests, drown us in Site C, eugenics, no affordable housing, collapsing healthcare, and you think I care about the Cons?
Dude, we have already lost.Vote, pat yourself on the back, but know it means nothing.
*Edit: I spoil my ballot, or vote for some joke party*

@douglaspynn You're wrong. Period, end of story. But if you'd rather a dictatorship, then fine. But I'll continue participating in the democracy because that's the best way to do this. I know my MLA, I know my MP, I know they work their butts off. I've also been elected myself, I know how hard it is to get the policies you personally believe in to happen, but it can and DOES happen. The only way to ensure it does not, is by never participating.
Re-engage my friend. It matters and we need you!

@chris @douglaspynn that's a bunch of nonsense. Spoiling your ballot is a valid way to participate in democracy. In this situation, the entire political class is eugenicist and pro colonial. It's also building democracy to just ignore all those bastards and build something else through mutual aid and other methods.

I'm not wrong. I'm dead-on accurate, and I find it tiresome.
I'm tired of being right and have people keep arguing even tho reality has proven them wrong time after time.Being a cog in the machine will not change the machine.

@Geoffberner @douglaspynn
Sure, Spoiling your ballot is a valid form of protest in a democracy, nothing wrong with that, but what I am more concerned about is the “it means nothing" attitude. That's simply not true. We *do* live in a Democracy. The very fact that the BC United just folded into the Conservatives because they knew they would not get the votes this election PROVES that voting matters and that there are fundamental differences in how these parties will run the government.
The "means nothing" atittude is fatalist, defeatist.
Ya, it's hard to make change, but saying its impossible or that it's all rigged is just what assholes like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Vladimir Putin want us to think.
It's wrong. And I won't apologize for calling it out.

I actually enjoy thinking of ways to spoil my ballot.
Big speech?
Quotes?
Doodles?
Wipe my butt with it?
Photos of cats? -

@douglaspynn So then burn down the machine! That's just as valid a course of action... doing nothing is not.
