Am I the only person who thinks programming languages aren't pokemon, and you really absolutely do not need to catch em all?

Am I the only person who thinks programming languages aren't pokemon, and you really absolutely do not need to catch em all? Cuz it feels that way. A lot.

@jenniferplusplus I have a lot more respect for gym leaders and the idea of specializing in one type

Maybe not.
But I my be one of the few that think we have WAY too many programming languages, and that most of them are ego-projects by someone who ends up duplicating 99% of what other languages already do, and just end up creating new operators and syntax for things that already exist. -
@jenniferplusplus I am a fan of collecting all the languages, but that's because I am basically a crow at heart. Ooh this is shiny! So's this! And that!
I absolutely do not think everybody needs to be like me. It's impractical and possibly unhealthy.

@mloxton Oh, yes. Approximately all programming languages are ego projects

@jenniferplusplus True, but I *would* love it if languages had to, along with having a logo, have an anthropomorphic creature mascot

Working in different programming languages teaches you different ways of solving problems.
Each one has a strength and weakness and even if you eventually specialize the experience of other languages will inform your work going forward.
As a C++ dev understanding how Rust does things is enormously informative.
Practically you have to make tough choices eventually but while you can spend time with as many as you can.

@jenniferplusplus i used to think people would grow out of this way of thinking when they got into the workforce and out of college, but i was very wrong
