To reiterate: I'm not making an argument against content warnings. But hypotheticals like this one have helped me think through some of their limitations. One is that they can't really be effective without also being somewhat specific. You can use them to help people make informed decisions about how much to engage a topic, but not to help them avoid that topic altogether. Their utility is bound up with naming the topic.

To me it's a critical point that CWs don't actually censor or suppress anything. You just click the button to open it up.
But they do give you a moment to brace yourself (or decide you don't want to deal with that now).
I think my biggest complaint is that I can't add a CW to a boosted post. My instance requires CWs on politics, so I have a lot of "uspol" CW posts (especially lately).
But if I'm boosting other political content, I have to decide whether to boost as-is or post new.
