there are many possible answers to that question; for example, it could just be that we get more accurate coverage of it these days when it happens. we don't claim to really know "the" reason, or anything like that...
but the extinction burst explanation feels intuitively correct to us, moreso than anything else we've come up with so far

because... that control is waning. people aren't worshipping these guys in the same way anymore.

@ireneista The same thing happens with groups. Whether it's those engaged in a civil war, or say, conservative christians. When they realize they are losing, they get more violent. I always think of Northern Ireland as an example.
It is, perversely, a good sign. But of course there's no guarantee that they won't take us all down in the process.

agreed all around, it's got all the markings of an extinction burst at the societal level (as well as with techbro ceos), let's hope it works out that way but it's not going to be easy getting from here to there.
