The Movable Type people at least had the excuse that their software was never open source, it was just proprietary software distributed with a very generous free tier. So when they started turning the pricing screws on their customers, it was only a change of degree, not kind.
All the Movable Type users ran to WordPress because WordPress was GPL, which meant that no vendor could ever turn the pricing screws on them ever again
