@inthehands @nightdream For anybody interested in this, I think Loewen's book "Sundown Towns" is very much worth reading. The way he weaves together hard census data with history and anecdote really changed my understanding of America.

@inthehands @nightdream I went to college in Oregon, and was eventually horrified that the state was intended to be a “sundown state”. In retrospect, it explained a lot.

Something I’ve read / heard from several Black people who’ve lived in both the South and Minnesota is that they’re both super racist, and the difference is just that in the South it’s more open and explicit — which perversely makes it easier to navigate, since as a Black person the lines aren’t invisible to you.
