Mastodon really, REALLY needs to fix its card-request Ddos hammering.
I see now even Amazon is quasi blocking card requests from various Mastodon servers. Youtube meanwhile is completely blocking a lot of fediverse server card requests.
It's a real friggin' problem that the powers that be have been aware of for years, and still haven't fixed. Don't ask the websites to fix it by going CDN yada yada. Fix it on the fediverse side.

@coffeegeek I'm not seeing this behaviour if I paste a picture into the toot?
-
@chetwisniewski doesn't matter on my end. I've tried that - posting a photo, and also putting a link to our site in the post. If I do it, even with the photo showing, that post to mastodon kills my site for 20-30secs, and then it is forced to reboot on our VPS, meaning the site is down for 2-4 minutes.
-
@coffeegeek I need to do more testing, but that seems odd. It shouldn't trigger a hit unless it needs to generate the thumbnail. (I will test and confirm)
-
@chetwisniewski If it means anything, I've already tested this several times, and it still does a card request from 1000s of servers. Even if I post a photo with the post.

@coffeegeek Your coffeegeek website HTML is not being cached by Cloudflare. See the response header "cf-cache-status: DYNAMIC" https://developers.cloudflare.com/cache/concepts/cache-responses/#dynamic

@phurd Yes, I know this. We can't do the full cloudfare caching because it would disrupt several dynamic components on our website, including serving our locally hosted coffee related company ads. We've tried that route, and if we can't display our non-disruptive, locally hosted ads, we don't exist as a content provider any longer
Hence "don't say use a CDN etc etc.
This is a mastodon problem. Not a website host problem. Needs to be fixed on Mastodon if the fediverse wants to continue to grow and expand and appeal to the normals.
