the whole problem with fedi's lack of community groups is it doesn't match the way people socialize at all
like, in meatspace you would hang out in a community space and interact with people there who you may not know
but then you'd make friends there and eventually start doing things together outside of the community space
community spaces are open but in a constrained way, they let new people in a controlled way under the umbrella of a common interest
while fedi is a very broad public space, an open world, interacting with strangers is rather the equivalent of talking to people on the street
and the a follow request is like "hey, let's be friends" which is not natural at all and often unwelcome after little to no interaction
but it's the only way to keep up with someone you may otherwise never get to see again
with that in mind it's easy to see how the "instance as a community" concept formed, it is so much easier to interact with and make friends on the local timeline
I made most of my good fedi friends by interacting with members of this instance and a few on the bubble timeline, and then their own friends
I don't use either of these timelines anymore though
and a self-hosted instance only starts making sense when you're at this point, with an established friend group
fedi needs groups. :crie: -

the problem, of course, is that noone wants to use them because they are modeled after twitter hashtags -
