cognitive dissonance is when your actions conflict with your values
cognitive dissonance *theory* predicts that when this happens, people tend to adjust their values to explain their actions instead of changing their actions
and so when you find that you have spent the last 5 years, painfully learning every detail of a sophisticated front end framework
you will violently resist the suggestion it is bad

this is i think also why i need my vim disclaimer
i don’t feel that strongly about vim in particular- all modal text editors are bad. all text editors are bad. all software is bad. This is the premise of all my posts. But the strong defense of vim I very reliably recieve every single time i am critical of it- and the projection on me that it’s *me* being emotional about it- is some indication of the level of pain vim is causing people to lead to this strength of cognitive dissonance responses

sadly, this all has a pseudo-evolutionary effect on technology.
Technology that causes pain is selected for and defended with strenous argument (as the people defending the painful tech believe they are defending their own ego, reputation and identity)
And tech that just painlessly gets the job done and gets out of the way? easily forgotten. Seen as unserious or lady-like

because if that can credibly be seen as a better and easier tech than the one I slaved over- i wasted my time and look like a fool who is irresponsible with time and money
that cannot possibly be true so i will fight that other tech with my life

the is how online political radicalisation works too. For most “normal” people admitting they are wrong is not so much the problem as admitting that their actions over the course of a significant investment of years were wrong.
writing off a chunk of your life as foolish and wasteful is *painful* and difficult. it’s like vendor lock in for your brain
