Reminder to Fedi admins that are moderating the spam wave that started last week: @iftas has been maintaining a list of instances, keeping track of which are still impacted, and doing outreach to the impacted instances to assist:

Roughly half the servers used in today's spam wave have already responded to our community outreach and modified their registration settings, deleted the spam accounts and posts, and hopefully will be better prepared for similar events in the future. Thank you to our community for spotting this, helping write the admin alerts in various languages, contacting the affected servers, and updating our worksheet! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13sskOdKraYo2hSMK353Ijm0_K8WCp-JHs6cyruffedA/ #FediAdmin #MastoAdmin #spam @sw_isac

There's also this resource for helping prevent spam account sign ups: a list of a few thousand disposable domains:

@hachyderm @iftas "and doing outreach to the impacted instances to assist" This, to me, is a classic Mastodon-community-style response to the issue. Treating the impacted instances as part of the victim set, rather than just de-federating and abandoning them to the wolves. The impacted instances that don't see the spam as a problem - well, that sends a message all of its own, doesn't it?

Agreed! It's really important to remember that people support people and people solve people problems, sometimes - but not always - with the aid of technology.
There are a lot reasons this is important, but situations like these where instances may be compromised and 1 ) not know or 2 ) not know what they can do to make it stop is how humans can help each other with knowledgesharing and support.
