anyone can easily go to pornhub or any other major porn site and click the "i am 18+ button". and yea, a large number of teenagers do this and openly discuss it in their peer groups.
minors can literally just pretend to be 18 on fedi when they're not, which is what I did when i joined this place at 17 (which was like 1.5 years ago, for the record).
it's the responsibility of parents to teach their kids about proper online safety and staying away from age-inappropriate content. and honestly, for teenagers it's their own responsibility to either stay away from that content or fucking look at it, who cares.
i'm tired of people who pretend that a teen willfully looking at a nude online at like 16 or 17 is in any way comparable to sex between minors and adults. age of consent laws are obviously good and necessary. the hysteria surrounding what content minors look at and interact with online is not.
i scraped 400 gigabytes of yaoi doujins from nhentai at 16. it was a nice exercise in writing web scrapers and bypassing captchas and rate limits.
all that we need is proper content warnings and filtering tools. this gives everyone - not just minors - the ability to decide what kind of content they want to see. -

@[email protected] this is pretty much my opinion, with the added bit that, it is absolutely reasonable for an instance admin to want to cover their asses legally by making an instance 18+, due to the aforementioned laws.

@lizzy there's another side to this though, and it's that marginalised people are easier to frame as perpetrators. that's especially true for transfeminine people, since the predator stereotype is one of the big transmisogynistic tropes. there are loads of people who would jump at the opportunity to harass a trans woman over allegations like that, even on those occasions when they're obviously false. that's because they want to hurt trans people, and all they really need is an excuse that's good enough for them to get away with it.
so for many it isn't really about what content minors see or not, but instead about personal safety. and I think that that's unfortunate, because it makes the community less accessible to minors. back when I was a teen in the 90's, I had NOTHING. and it sucked! what exists now for queer youth is so incredibly valuable. it's super fucking sad that all the hate and violence is threatening to take it away again.
