Saw this "BOLD" prediction on the future of AI from Gianluca Mauro, who has worked in AI for 10 years and also teaches at Harvard. It is a very interesting… | 19 comments on LinkedIn

@sarajw I've heard similar from others about the level of performance of AI products. It feels to me like a big, short term grift by many of these companies scrambling to integrate it into their products. Shiny “AI ” buttons anyone?

@andycarolan yeeeeep.
If, like Gianluca predicts, it's just going to exist everywhere - I hope so much that it becomes less power and water hungry. Or that the power demand forces a hard push on sustainable energy that we can all benefit from.
But in order to make that push, the companies need to be making money from this thing - and hopefully it's now common knowledge that it commonly outputs slop.

@sarajw I doubt the power demands will push green energy... it didn't happen with B**coin or Bl**kchain after all, and with the likes of BP scrapping it's 2030 reduction targets... ugh (sorry, went off on a tangent)
It's always about money isn't it... investors... always the investors.

@andycarolan yeah
I'd almost be in a "don't care" situation over the whole thing if it wasn't so power hungry.

@sarajw @andycarolan My wild prediction here is that due to the cost of doing it in the cloud with thin margins, much of technology will be simplified and distributed to user’s devices. (This is what Apple is doing.) The simple things are not massively power hungry and if they can be integrated with your data in private, there is potential of usefulness. For all other use cases, I think the novelty has worn off and users will think of AI features less and less.

@sarajw Yup, AI will fizzle out mostly I think, and hopefully not cause too much damage in the process.
