Want to hear a depressing story? Sure you do.
I mentioned recently that I was looking to give my old, busted Framework laptop to someone here on fedi who could use it for parts. Someone reached out, and we struck a deal: I'd send them everything for free if they paid the shipping.
Shipping something between two individuals C.O.D. is a giant pain in the ass, so I decided to take a chance on this person. I paid for the shipping, and then told them how much it cost and asked for reimbursement.
Of course that was the point where they stopped replying.
So! Congratulations to the person who managed to chisel me out of $13, I guess.

I go back and forth about whether I should call out the person in question here directly. I normally don't like putting people on blast. But on the other hand, if someone asked me whether they should do business with this person, I would probably tell them not to!
The moral dilemmas around how to respond to getting chiseled out of $13 are more painful than actually losing the $13

@jalefkowit Oof! Any chance they're just on holiday, or indisposed?
-
@neil The possibility of that is the one slender thread keeping me from putting them on blast.
It's been more than a week now, so I'm not hopeful. But who knows.

Everything else about my experience of owning that Framework laptop was utterly cursed, so in a way I guess it's fitting that trying to use it to do a good turn for someone else should end up being utterly cursed too. That machine had the mark of Cain upon it. I should probably be glad I got it out of my house before it attracted a falling meteor

@jalefkowit As someone who's been vaguely interested in a Framework device: do you have any guesses whether your experience with that device indicates something about their machines in general, or was it just that particular one that concentrates all the ěvǐl?

@ryanrandall I would say kind of half and half.
The specific problem I had was a firmware bug that only affected the very first generation of Frameworks.
The more general problem is that I spent two years interacting with Framework support trying to get them to acknowledge and fix the issue, and they never did, despite lots of 1st gen owners complaining of it in the forums. The firmware bug silently drained the RTC battery, eventually rendering the machine unbootable unless it was plugged in. By the end Framework was telling me that this 13" thin-and-light laptop was actually designed to be used plugged in all day.

@ryanrandall So my general takeaway was -- lots of people who have bought Frameworks have had no problems, so if you buy one, the odds seem decent that you won't have problems either. But if you have a problem bad enough to need help from Framework support, keep a bottle of Maalox handy, because you are in for A Ride.

@jalefkowit Always get payment up front!

@ocdtrekkie If it had been a larger sum I would have insisted on it. But $13 was small enough that I felt like, maybe it's worth taking a chance on humanity here.
