It never occurred to me that basements increase the (literal) carbon footprint of a home. But of course, all the concrete would, especially when the rest of it in Canada is usually made from wood. I wonder if a pile-supported home would be more or less safe in an earthquake?

@chris What you need in an earthquake is for the structure to move with the earth, and not shake apart. I don't think basements are an issue in that regard.
