Procreate has taken a clear stance against adding #genAI to their art tools: https://procreate.com/ai
"We think machine learning is a compelling technology with a lot of merit, but the path generative AI is on is wrong for us. Built on a foundation of theft, the technology is steering us toward a barren future. "
#Procreate is the art tool that made digital art feel accessible to me and I'm glad I don't have to worry about ditching their software in a month or two because they pivoted to AI

@docpop sooo happy about this!

I've said it before, but now is a great time for companies to take clear stances about their plans for AI (scraping, etc). Users have been burned in the past by companies that tried to pivot to AI (or NFTs or whatever the next bubble is). Making a clear stance like Procreate did means I can feel good about continuing to invest my time in mastering their tools. https://mastodon.social/@docpop/112544269100940644

@docpop
I don’t want artists to lose jobs. I don’t want companies to control AI locking out individuals. I don’t want companies to use AI to replace artists…I can’t control if a human or a robot sees my artwork, and to try to deny access based on status (of machine or human) is authoritarian and dystopian.
Output may be a violation of copyright… but ‘just looking’ can’t… even if the thing doing the viewing is a machine. Only the output is a problem. Not the input. Training is fair use.

@grid I really like Proceeate Dream. I can’t compare it to many other animation apps, but I really enjoy it.

Artists are reacting very positively to Procreate's "anti-AI" promise. The company has gained at least 3,000 new followers on Instagram and 6,000 on X (according to stats on Social Blade) in the past few days. It looks like they've gained significant new followers on TikTok, Youtube, and Threads too, but that's harder to track.
#Procreate could have chased investor money by switching to subscriptions or adding AI, but they know that listening to their consumers is better for sustainable growth.

@docpop The "starving artisan as a victim of AI" narrative falls on its face as soon as one realizes the claim that AI are "stealing" their work is highly hypocritical. Artisans have always been inspired by the work of other artisans, and in many instances copy each other's works. This is an understood fact amongst plastic artisans. Picasso once said that "good artisans copy, great artisans steal," in reference to this. This is in no shape or form different from what AI does.

@rafaelperez The "artisans have always been inspired by the work of other artisans" narrative falls flat when you remember that computers aren't intelligent.
A machine can't be inspired. It is simply theft and commercial usage of personal data.
