I really feel this #MastodonMigration due to the #Twitter ban in #Brazil might be our last chance. It is clear that #Bluesky has the marketing that #Mastodon lacks - understandable given its FOSS nature.
But these moments are rare, and if this is indeed the start of Twitter's downfall, it may be our last chance to secure Mastodon as The Public Forum. We can't hand over its keys to another for-profit that will enshitify the forum of our democracies in the years to come.
It is our time as users to promote Mastodon, especially for those of us who work in the press or have other distribution channels. Yes, we may even have to come back to The Bird Cage to convince our mutuals to choose Mastodon when the time comes. This is the first time an entire country has been forced to choose between Mastodon and Bluesky, and what Brazil chooses might determine what the rest of the world chooses as the dominoes continue to fall.
So get out there and convince everyone. It could be our last chance.

@pablogilah I'm not sure why there was this move to Bluesky (who was the influential figures behind it), but the ambiance there is really taking off. Even the Brazilian president is there now, instead of setting up a Brazilian instance.
-
@veroandi I am really scared of this move. I really think it was a huge mistake of Lula to only offer his Bluesky. Mastodon is only backed by us, and the least we can do is to get out and promote it as much as we can. But we won't convince any outsiders from the inside, we have to get back. There. To the Bird Cage.

@pablogilah Don't think it is our last chance but agree with the overall arc of this: Mastodon and the fediverse don't have dedicated marketing teams paid for with VC and billionaire money - we have people power. But that needs to be organized and focused for windows of opportunities like this one. Think there is still time with Brazil as I think this will play out over a while.
But yes, we are the fediverse marketing department.
-
@tchambers That's the point. We are the fediverse market department.
-
@tchambers I don't think Bluesky is investing on marketing. The migration of the last 3 days seems to be natural to me. People were looking for alternatives, many are already inactive on Threads because don't like it and people heard about Bluesky as an alternative. I do believe it's mouth to mouth.

@veroandi I agree, though they do have a dedicated paid press team working to get positive press mentions that do build awareness and brand building and can get their positive takes into stories - that does have an impact.
