LOL, could you remove the reply addresses from your reply. This is one of the unfortunate characteristics of Wordpress blogs, all the addresses are included in your reply.

FYI There are a bunch of polls about Starter Packs, starting with this one:
The Nexus of Privacy (@[email protected])
A poll: how do you feel about the general idea of starter packs (or some equivalent) on fedi? (1/7) Bluesky's "starter packs" make it easy to follow a bunch of accounts all at once. Anybody can create one or more starter packs, and they're used for a lot of different things; the Blacksky starter pack, for example, is great for newcomers from Black Twitter, and Newsmast's FediSky starter pack is helpful for finding folks you might know from the fedivere. But Bluesky's implementation has some major problems: people can be added to starter packs without their consent, aren't even notified when it happens, and it's not obvious how to opt out. And any mechanism like this potentially creates "rich get richer" dyanamics and risks magnifying existing biases -- guys tend to mostly add guys to starter packs, white people tend to mostly add white people to starter packs, etc. Still, despite the problems, they're very helpful for onboarding. I've had discussions with multiple people working on ideas for fediverse starter packs or the equivalents, and similar questions keep cropping up. So I figured I'd do a series of polls to get feedback on what people think. To start with, the basic question, how do you feel about the general idea of starter packs (or some equivalent) on fedi? *the Mastodon iOS app cuts off long text in the polls, so I'm including it here as well* - No, Bad idea for fedi, don't do it - Maybe, depending on how it's implemented - Yes, this is important functionality - get something out now, we can fix it later! - Not sure EDIT: untagged newsmast. Sorry about that! #fediverse #bluesky #starterPacks [ ] No. Bad idea for fedi. Don't do it! [ ] Maybe, depending on how it's implemented [ ] Yes, this is important functionality - get something out now, we can fix it later! [ ] Not sure

I'm totally fine with opt-out for myself. But as these poll results reflect, people in the verse are, on the whole, keener on opt-in.
I strongly suggest you make this an opt-in thing ASAP, to avoid getting dogpiled the way @snarfed.org did when he added BlueSky and Nostr support to BridgyFed.

@Alice Certainly they will recover. They are, after all, social media warriors.

Very familiar with the poll and have been promoting it. This implementation could maybe be viewed as a temporary laboratory for whatever future more integrated solution emerges and this account will certainly collaborate with anyone working in this area.

Regarding Opt-in, Opt-out. So far no one has objected to being in a pack. Misidentified one person for a topic and they asked to be removed. 100% opt-in is very laborious to do, and would effectively kill any such implementation. If we want to have these things which help build community, we can't impose so many impediments that they become useless. Trying to be very clear about the opt-out policy, and responsive. Let's see how this goes.

Also, feel like the absolutely critical thing is that people are notified when a pack is published and given the clear opportunity and method to object. Again, this effort is experimenting with how to do this and so far there has been no problem communicating with pack members. All so far are very pleased.

Also, very important IMO, is pack size. In order to manage these things it is critical that the number of accounts in a pack be capped. Finding 25 to be ideal because it is enough to 'prime the pump', but not too many to stay on top of. Also 25 accounts fit in a 500 char post if you need to message all of them with some room left over for the message.
Plenty more lessons learned, and happy to discuss them.
