The difference between it being really hot in SF and in Singapore is, it’s super hot in Singapore all the time so everywhere is built to accommodate that heat. I still go out and do stuff all the time because.. well I have to. And it’s not bad. AC bus stops, AC tunnels. Schools, trains, buses. Shops. My home there is on the 30th floor. With windows open, I don’t need AC.
When it’s hot in SF, there isn’t a lot of infra for it and I’d rather just stay in. ;/

I know some people have a weird knee jerk anti-AC world view, but in some parts of the world is it absolutely critical infra, like heating.
-
@skinnylatte people literally will die where I live without AC. It's arguable whether we should be living here, but as long as we are, AC is a requirement. What's not required is keeping movie theaters in the low 60s. I hate that.

@skinnylatte probably not your favorite guy, but an principal statesman of Singapore would have agreed with you. https://www.vox.com/2015/3/23/8278085/singapore-lee-kuan-yew-air-conditioning

In fact, an important book of critical essays on Singapore politics and civil society is Cherian George’s ‘Air-Conditioned Nation’ and ‘Air-Conditioned Nation Revisited’
-
@fdr he was right on that one thing and a few other things
-
@skinnylatte it's kind of crazy now arguably with heat pumps AC combined with water heaters can really make things super efficient.
-
@grumpasaurus yeah and I think the global north should make that switch first

I traveled in Japan this summer, and it was, as forewarned, hot and very humid. Then I returned back home to California as we were having a heat wave.
Despite it being much drier and less hot here in California, I realized pretty quickly that I suffered more here than in Japan. My home, like many buildings here, are not air conditioned and barely cool down enough during the night to get rid of the heat they stored during the day!
