“The leader’s displays of machismo and his kinship with other male leaders are not just bluster, but a way of exercising power at home and conducting foreign policy. Virility enables his corruption, projecting the idea that he is above laws that weaker individuals must follow."

"It also translates into state policies that target women and LGBTQ+ populations, who are as much the strongman’s enemies as prosecutors and the press. ….
Virility, in the form of the leader’s dominance over women and other men, has pride of place in his [i.e., the strongman’s] plans for national transformation

@troy_frizzell I certaintly don't read any of the commentators I've excerpted above to be pretending that Politico is journalism acting in good faith. Au contraire.

@philip_cardella @GottaLaff I very much appreciate the encouragement, and share your admiration for the wonderful job @GottaLaff does daily to keep us informed and thinking. I did keep a blog for some years, and then, as I went into full retirement, found my energy for doing so was waning, so I gave it up. I'm afraid I have even less energy now!

@philip_cardella Can it get any more blatant? But it's taken as totally normal — but a shocking number of us.
-

@philip_cardella Definitely unusual and terrifying, and totally in line with long-studied trends in rising fascist groups of the past.

@SordidAmok Yes, it seems that beating women is now the focus, and not racial distinctions in the women to be beaten. They talked about spanking Hillary Clinton in the very same way.

@PeasLuvnJustice Yes, women are to be viewed as and treated as dependent children, with male authority figures as the wise and ruling father who keeps them on the straight and narrow path and punishes them — for their own good, of course — if they deviate. This is in line with the thinking of aeons of patriarchy bolstered by religious ideology.

@stevensanderson Yes, this rhetoric betrays some deep insecurities in men spreading it around, doesn't it?
-

@wdlindsy it most certainly does. An ego so fragile they must try to destroy what they disagree with or what glorious leader disagrees with.

@stevensanderson That's very well-stated. I agree!

@wdlindsy tucker publicly fantasizing about a "daddy" spanking a "bad girl" daughter in extremely sexual ways on stage and everyone applauding is one more confirmation that pedocon theory is a theory the same way gravity is a theory. the us is cooked when half your population is like that

@wdlindsy Ruth Ben Ghiat's book Strongmen discusses this misogyny in fascist regimes at length. The suppression and sexual objectification of women is one of the defining characteristics seen in these male dictators.
-
@wdlindsy it's just sexual for them. imagine if he substituted "bad girl" for "bad boy" and daughter for son in his speech, he would be 100% called out by the crowd for being homoerotic, but when it's a girl it's okay because for cons incest and pedophilia is awesome and god-approved but they draw the line at being gay or women being able to deny consent
-
@wdlindsy I took misogynist Carlson's red-faced & thumping raving uncontrolled glee about spanking a 15 year old "bad bad girl" hard enough to hurt her in a planned way as a grotesque display of public sexual sadism & not just icky. It was revolting.
