After giving it a go for a several weeks, I'm still unsettled by the feeling that there is no escaping Big Takes All The Time (even when I'm genuinely interested in the thinking of some of the Takers); and another feeling that is even more uncomfortable having to do with how being there is Creating Value For A Project I Ultimately Probably Find Deeply Troubling
oh well, thanks fellow academics for making network effects choices I don't like

@inquiline I understand this. Academic herd migration to BS reveals something about academia’s unrelenting hunt for impact. Individuals are safety seeking. Like you I’m more engaged here and I think this has to do with being herd-wary.

@inquiline The reassembling of academic twitter in BS has also caused me to reflect on the knowledge communities that academia is formally trained to ignore. There is so much expertise outside the academy that is overlooked and underestimated because the academy has been conditioned to face inwards, and has mistaken its training in technique for superior knowledge. But as the apparent gold standard of journal publishing reveals itself to be the precondition for AI slop to prevail, the moral failure of the public mission becomes, well, embarrassing.

@kate 100%. It's such a tragedy, all of it.

@inquiline Yes, that’s it exactly. This is a building with people in it. Remodelling it radically while it’s so densely occupied is very complicated.
