I think it matters a lot when the people building the fediverse do not agree amongst themselves how to describe the thing they are building.

Yes this is a subtoot. But it's not meant to be mean spirited. I think it's important to accept that people may never agree. And what we're talking about here is only successful if full agreement is not actually required.

The disagreement matters in different ways. If people who disagree are working on the same platform, i.e. mastodon, then that platform is likely to exhibit inconsistent behaviors. Because different people got to implement their ideas at different times.
If people who disagree build separate platforms, then the inconsistent behavior will manifest in how they communicate with each other.
The former situation is unfortunate. I think the latter is what we want and where the interesting work is.

I'm looking forward to moving past the stage where we spend energy telling other people they're doing it wrong. Once we accept that other actors can do what they want, then it becomes a fascinating exercise of determining "how do I want my platform to react to the wide array interesting behavior out there?"

@polotek I would like it if our common grounds were a little bit bigger and more stable. But I do generally agree with you. Permissionless experimentation is the best thing the open social web has going. The most important thing is to embrace and protect that.

@jenniferplusplus I think you're doing great. Arguing with other nerds can be a huge headache. But it does create meaningful improvements in our understanding of the problem space.

@polotek Do you consider Bluesky (or Threads) to be an example of separate platforms that might communicate with each other? Or is that going too far?
