Idk who needs to read this but it’s okay for people to like different things and make different choices than you. It’s okay to have valid constructive criticism as well. Fandoms can be insane, I’ve seen it with PlayStation v Xbox, Android v iOS and so forth. People can like what they like and if that’s a different choice than you that’s okay.
I say this as people on #Fediverse get highly upset at any level of criticism of #Mastodon and other platforms. People getting upset at other protocols. #ActivityPub is amazing but it’s not perfect, nothing is and that’s okay. We live in a world where we have these big beautiful brains where we invent and come up with things. I like to celebrate that.
People making different choices than you would is good. People have many layered reasons as to why they do and don’t do things. -
@damon
People not using #Mastodon is okay it’s not the perfect solution for everyone. That doesn’t mean Mastodon isn’t really good. I remember trying it in 2020/21 and thinking no one will ever use this, my friends will never use this. I was happy to be wrong about the first part. It’s gotten much better and will only improve but that doesn’t mean it nor the #Fediverse is suited for everyone and that’s okay -

@damon personally I mostly care about interoperability anyways. Questions like "can I talk to my friend who's on Blarg from my account on Chortle or do I have to make yet another account for another social network to even see their posts let alone interact with them?"

damonreplied to ch0ccyra1n :she_her::neocat_floof_cute: last edited by@ch0ccyra1n That is how it should be. To me there should be interoperability between the popular social protocols that is what should be the "town square" not one specific platform, protocol nor app. If your friend is using a Bluesky app they should be able to engage without without issue while you both use the apps & platform you prefer

@damon I use Mastodon because it seems the simplest for me in terms of microblogging that has some interoperability with other softwares using Activity Pub.
I see several problems in its UI and I feel you that there is too much ideology around the fediverse.
I think we should start using the term interoperable web instead of the fediverse. People can choose whatever they want, but the important thing will be if in the long term we don't have walled gardens. After almost 20 years involved with the topic of a federated social web, I think the concept is confusing for most people.
We should tell: I have an account on platform A, and I can follow and interact with you on platform B. That's the main idea. Forget servers and federation.

@everton137 The issue then becomes an ideology. What constitutes as “open”? Many fediverse users don’t want open nor interoperability. The Fediverse is effectively a gated community.
